Antofagasta's Churches Go Digital: 3D Virtual Tours Launched for 20 Heritage Churches
Exploring the Cathedral of Antofagasta, visiting historic churches in Alto Loa or entering temples located in former nitrate mining settlements is now possible from anywhere thanks to an innovative digital platform designed to bring the region’s religious heritage closer to the community.
The initiative, called “Virtual Tour: Churches of the Antofagasta Region”, was developed by Corporación Proa Antofagasta and offers 3D virtual tours of 20 Catholic churches located throughout the provinces of Antofagasta, El Loa and Tocopilla.
Through this free tool, users can explore churches, chapels and cathedrals in detail, viewing their naves, altars, bell towers and other interior spaces, while also accessing historical and heritage information about each site.
One of the project’s main attractions is that it includes not only the region’s best-known churches, but also temples located in the pre-Andean communities of Alto Loa and former nitrate mining towns, allowing these sites, often far from major urban centres, to reach a wider audience.
The platform brings together digital records of 20 religious buildings considered a fundamental part of the cultural heritage of northern Chile. Highlights include San Lucas Church in Toconao, San Francisco de Asís Parish in Chiu Chiu, Our Lady of Guadalupe Sanctuary in Ayquina and St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Antofagasta.
The tour also features churches from different municipalities and localities across the region, including Calama, San Pedro de Atacama, María Elena, Quillagua, Mejillones, Taltal and Tocopilla.
Representatives of Corporación Proa Antofagasta explained that the initiative emerged through collaboration with cultural manager Ramón Olivares and the Renacer Andino Association, who promoted the use of technological tools to bring regional heritage closer to residents and encourage its preservation.
The organisation’s president, Jaime Olivares, stated that the results obtained demonstrate the potential of digital platforms to showcase local heritage and create new opportunities to incorporate other sites of historical and cultural interest.
In addition to facilitating access to these buildings, the project seeks to strengthen regional identity and promote knowledge of local history among younger generations through digital formats that are increasingly familiar and accessible to users.
The virtual tours are now available free of charge at iglesiasantofagasta.cl, where anyone can select one of the featured churches and begin an interactive experience that connects technology, history and heritage.
